Direction Post, North East Side Of Hemsworthy Gate Crossroads

Venton, Ashburton, Devon

Grid ref: SX 7418 7609

This direction post stands at the crossroads of Hemsworthy Gate, on the high ground of northern Dartmoor. Like other guidestones scattered across the moor, it would have helped travellers navigate the open plateau when paths were less defined and landmarks few. The stone is typical of moorland waymarking, carved with directions for the routes that crossed this exposed terrain.

The crossroads itself reflects the importance of these high moorland passages. Today the post remains as a modest but functional reminder of how people moved through the moor before modern roads and signage. It sits within the wider landscape of Dartmoor's open commons, where similar stones can still guide walkers across the granite and heather.
