Crock of Gold is a Bronze Age cairn and stone cist that sits within the vast, windswept expanse of Dartmoor. Like many of the moor's ancient monuments, it has weathered thousands of years of exposure to the elements, its stones now worn smooth by rain and wind. The cist—a stone burial chamber—once held the remains of someone important enough to warrant this permanent marker on the high moor.
The evocative name speaks to Dartmoor's deep folklore traditions, where treasure and mystery cling to the landscape as surely as mist. Walking out to find it among the heather and granite outcrops connects you directly to Bronze Age people who chose this exposed, exposed place as a place to remember their dead.
