County Bridge Stone On North East Side Of Road From Cockington Bridge Of Pondsworthy, About 80 Metres North West Of The Bridge

Lower Dunstone, Ashburton, Devon

Grid ref: SX 7162 7510

This boundary marker stands on the north east side of the road from Cockington Bridge, about 80 metres north west of Pondsworthy Bridge. Such stones are characteristic features of Dartmoor's landscape, marking the edges of parishes, manors or common land in the medieval and early modern periods. They served a practical purpose for those who worked the land and grazed stock on the moor, recording property lines and rights of use.

Today the stone sits within the working moorland north of the Bovey Valley, a quiet corner of Dartmoor where the roads and field boundaries still follow ancient patterns. Walkers following the minor roads through this area will find it a subtle reminder of how the moor's administrative divisions shaped the landscape over centuries, and of the people who maintained these boundaries through generations.
