Cairnfield 460m south east of Cox Tor

This cairnfield comprises a cluster of burial cairns dating to the Bronze Age, when the higher moorland was actively used for settlement and ritual practice. The cairns are stone-built mounds, some now quite modest in appearance, spread across the open ground south east of Cox Tor. They represent a concentration of ceremonial burial activity across a defined area of the moor.
Walking out to the site today, you encounter the cairns as low stony mounds among the bracken and heather. The landscape around Cox Tor remains largely as it has for thousands of years, open and windswept. The cairnfield offers a quiet reminder of Dartmoor's long human history and the communities who used these high places long before the medieval settlements below.
