Cairn

This cairn forms part of a cairnfield on Longstone Hill, one of many such clusters scattered across Dartmoor's high ground. Cairnfields like this one typically date to the Bronze Age, when communities built stone burial monuments and ritual sites across the moor. The individual cairns would originally have been more prominent, constructed from stone gathered from the surrounding moorland.

Today the site offers a sense of the moor's deep past. Walking the area, you can trace the pattern of these ancient stones and understand how Bronze Age people shaped the landscape. Longstone Hill's exposed position and views across Dartmoor make it characteristic of where such monuments were deliberately placed, visible and significant to those who built them.
