Cairn

This cairn is part of a cairnfield, a scattered group of burial and ritual monuments typical of Dartmoor's Bronze Age landscape. Built from the moorland stone at hand, such cairns were raised over burials or used in ceremonial contexts between roughly 2000 and 1000 BCE. They speak to the long human occupation of the high moor and the communities who lived and died here in prehistory.

On Longstone Hill today, the cairn sits among its companions in the surrounding field, modest stone heaps set into the moorland vegetation. Walking the area, you can read something of Bronze Age Dartmoor in these scattered markers. The site is a scheduled monument, protected for its archaeological importance and as part of the larger cairnfield that anchors our understanding of prehistoric settlement patterns across the moor.
