Assycombe holds evidence of human activity spanning thousands of years. A Bronze Age stone alignment sits alongside a prehistoric hut circle settlement, the scattered remains of stone-built homes from the earliest period of permanent moorland occupation. Later, a medieval long house and post-medieval farmstead were built on or near the same ground, showing how this corner of Dartmoor continued to draw settlers across the centuries.
Today the site appears as low stone features and earthworks across open moorland. The scheduled monument status reflects its archaeological importance as a palimpsest of settlement patterns. A visit rewards those patient enough to read the landscape and trace the different periods of use written in stone and turf.
