The Riverford Field Kitchen is one of the most distinctive dining experiences in the South West — and arguably one of the most principled restaurants in England. Situated on Riverford's Wash Farm near Buckfastleigh, at the foot of Dartmoor National Park, it serves a daily-changing set menu of 100% organic, vegetable-forward dishes grown just metres from the plate. Riverford began growing organic produce on this site in 1987, pioneering what became one of the UK's most celebrated farm box schemes. The Field Kitchen opened as an extension of that mission: to demonstrate what organic, seasonal cooking can genuinely achieve when the ingredient quality is truly exceptional. It has since won numerous awards and drawn visitors from across the world. The experience is deliberately different from a conventional restaurant. There are no choices: the kitchen cooks what the fields produce that day, assembled into a generous flow of six to eight dishes brought to the table for sharing. The whole restaurant is served simultaneously — there is one sitting, creating a genuine sense of communal occasion. Vegetables are never a side dish here; they are consistently the star of the plate, with meat and fish providing support. Dining can take place inside the restaurant (walls adorned with dried flowers from the kitchen garden) or on the garden terrace beside the herb garden. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to walk around the polytunnel and kitchen garden — a rare chance to see exactly where your meal originated. Brunch (Saturday only), lunch and supper run Wednesday to Saturday, with a Sunday lunch service. Booking is essential. Children aged 4-11 pay half price. The Field Kitchen has 48,000 Instagram followers and ranks #1 of all restaurants in Buckfastleigh on Tripadvisor.
