Fox Tor Cafe has been a fixture of Princetown life since 2010 and is one of the most beloved walkers' cafés on Dartmoor. Situated in the heart of England's highest moorland town, it serves as a warm refuge for hikers, cyclists, Ten Tors participants and Dartmoor regulars alike — muddy boots and paws genuinely welcome. The kitchen produces honest, hearty food using carefully sourced local suppliers: meat from Howells of Tavistock, produce from Tamar View Fruiterers, condiments from Dartmoor Chilli Farm and coffee from Buckfastleigh. Breakfasts are generous, lunches satisfying, and the homemade cakes — sticky lemon drizzle, chocolate and beetroot, coffee and walnut, rocky road — are genuinely exceptional. Everything from the scones to the chutneys is made on the premises. The menu also covers gluten-free options. The café has a warm, atmospheric interior with an open fire and wood-burning stove alongside two leather sofas — ideal for warming up after a wet day on the moor. An enclosed tea garden provides alfresco seating in better weather, and a covered outdoor area extends the season. The Fox Tor also holds a full licence and serves as Princetown's village off-licence, stocking Dartmoor Brewery bottled beers and a selection of wines. Bunkhouse accommodation sleeping up to 12 across three private rooms makes it a popular base for Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, Ten Tors teams and walking groups. Open Tuesday through Sunday, closed Mondays.
