Canonteign Falls is one of Devon's most celebrated visitor attractions, set within a 90-acre estate in the Teign Valley on the eastern fringe of Dartmoor National Park. At its heart is Lady Exmouth's Falls — the highest waterfall in South West England at 230ft — created in 1890 by diverting a stream over an ancient cliff face. A second set of falls, Clampitt Falls, adds to the spectacle. The climb to the top follows 90 original Victorian steps through the estate's most celebrated feature: the Victorian Fern Garden, awarded Plant Heritage National Collection status in 2022. This magical hanging valley is lined with prehistoric-looking ferns, babbling streams and twisted paths that feel utterly removed from the outside world. Seven lakes meander through the meadows below, providing rich habitats for wildlife. Scenic walking trails range from gentle lakeside strolls to invigorating woodland routes with panoramic views of the Devon countryside. The estate is also dotted with sculptures, a stone labyrinth, a living willow 'green ship' and fairies hidden along the trails for younger visitors to discover. Family fun is central to Canonteign's offering: adventure playgrounds with trampolines, a wooden galleon, zip wire and a mini assault course provide entertainment for all ages. The Canonteign Kitchen lakeside café serves seasonal homemade food, Devon cream teas, barista coffee and afternoon teas, all freshly prepared on site. The farm shop is stocked with local produce. Entry to the café and shop is free — dogs on leads are welcome throughout.
